San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS): Powering the Future with Skilled Labor
The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) stands as a testament to the strength and expertise of union craftsmen who built this critical facility. Today, union building tradesmen and women continue to be instrumental in maintaining SONGS, working under the General Presidents Maintenance Agreement—a national agreement facilitated by the Building and Construction Trades Department and the San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council.
With over 5 million man-hours logged each year, SONGS employs hundreds of skilled workers who are dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of this vital energy resource. Their ongoing maintenance work is crucial to the facility’s ability to generate power and contribute to the region’s energy needs.
A Key Player in Regional Energy Supply
SONGS is owned by Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas and Electric, and the City of Riverside. The facility has the capacity to generate 2,200 megawatts of power, which is enough to meet the energy needs of 1.4 million average homes at any given time. The ongoing maintenance and operation of this facility are essential to ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply for the region.
Our Commitment to Safety and Excellence
The San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council is proud to support the skilled workforce at SONGS. Through our commitment to fair wages, job security, and safe working conditions, we ensure that the tradesmen and women who maintain this facility can continue to perform their duties with the highest standards of safety and quality.
