The John S. Lyons Memorial Foundation, a cornerstone of labor leadership and community support in San Diego, is proud to offer its annual scholarship program. This initiative reflects the Foundation’s commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders through education.

Scholarship Details:

  • Award Amount: The Foundation offers up to one four-year college scholarship, totaling a maximum of $5,500. The initial award for the first year is $2,500, followed by continued scholarship assistance of $1,000 per year for up to three additional years, provided the student maintains the scholarship standards. Eligible expenses include tuition, books, and housing. This scholarship can be applied to school-related expenses at any accredited post-high school trade or technical school, community college, four-year university, or college.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Student Status: Applicants must be either a high school senior or a college student who has graduated from a San Diego or Imperial County school.
  • Union Affiliation: The applicant’s parent or legal guardian must be a member in good standing of any local labor union.
  • Academic and Community Involvement: Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale) and actively participate in community and/or extracurricular school activities.
  • Application: A complete application package is available upon request.

  • Applications for 2024 are now closed. 

How to Apply:

  • When the application opens, submit your completed application packet to the Scholarship Committee at the John S. Lyons Memorial Foundation, 3737 Camino del Rio South, Suite 202, San Diego, CA 92108.

Essay Requirement:

  • Topic: “Why are unions especially important for today’s workers?”
  • This essay should reflect your understanding of the role unions play in the modern workforce.
