Engineers and technicians must join forces when they want to accomplish big tasks.

For over 30 years, the John S. Lyons Foundation, affectionately known as the JOHNS, has been a beacon of community commitment and labor leadership in San Diego. Established in memory of Johnny Lyons, the esteemed Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters, Local 36, this foundation embodies his belief in the power of organized labor to uplift and support the community.

Johnny Lyons was more than just a labor leader; he was a civic-minded visionary who played an active role in the San Diego Leukemia Society, the Holiday Bowl, and numerous other local charities and civic organizations. His legacy continues through the Foundation’s annual John S. Lyons Memorial Banquet, where a Labor Leader of the Year is honored for their dedication to the labor movement and the community.

The funds raised at this event are entirely donated to charities selected by the Foundation, with zero administrative costs—a testament to the dedication of the volunteer Board Members and program planners. Originally supporting the San Diego Leukemia Society, the Foundation has since expanded its reach to include the San Diego Blood Bank Bone Marrow Donor Program, UCSD Cancer Center, the Salk Institute, and the Mesothelioma Foundation. To date, the Foundation has raised over $1.5 million for these vital research initiatives.

Beyond fundraising, the JOHNS are deeply involved in community service. Each May, they proudly support the U.S. Postal Workers Annual Food Drive by providing meals to the hundreds of volunteers who make this event a success in San Diego County. In recognition of Johnny Lyons’ commitment to the San Diego Holiday Bowl, the JOHNS, alongside the Building Trades Council, purchase over 100 tickets annually, ensuring this cherished San Diego tradition continues.

The John S. Lyons Foundation is a living testament to Johnny Lyons’ enduring legacy of leadership, community service, and unwavering support for those in need.
