We understand that in order to successfully diversify our unions’ memberships with more women, it helps to start sowing the seeds earlier. Girls and women receive a LOT of counter-messaging from an early age, about “who” is allowed to consider working in construction—and we know that messaging doesn’t include them.

In order to start pushing back against this kind of negative messaging, the SDBTC launched week-long construction boot camps for high school-aged girls. Taking place during the summer break, these programs are meant to help teenaged girls build confidence, feel empowered, and learn valuable skills that will serve them well in a successful future career in the trades. Through hands-on activities, meaningful mentorships, and quality instruction from journeywomen in the Building Trades, we’re paving the way for more women to see themselves, and ultimately thrive in the construction industry.

Opportunity, diversity, fairness, and the ability to work yourself into the middle class: these are foundational principles of the SDBTC. Our council is committed to working with our affiliates and signatory contractors to ensure that we are providing optimal training in an ever-evolving environment. We are also committed to ensuring our communities know about and understand the life-changing path a career in the Building Trades can offer them and their families.
